Ceramics Today
For this unit's hand-building challenge, you are to research a contemporary ceramic artist, by clicking on one of the above links, and create a piece of ceramic art that has been inspired by the work of that artist you choose.  By utilizing the hand building techniques you've learned so far (pinch, slab and coil), you are challenged with the task to put your own meaningful twist on the theme of your artist's work from form and color to function.  Here is a list of criteria to consider:
  • Your creation should represent an idea that is meaningful to you.  Perhaps it relates to a current even issue; something that you've experienced; one of your interests or hobbies. In other words, you are not copying the researched artists work, rather making it new in some important way to you.  You may replicate aspects of the artists work just don't copy!
  • Be careful of trite or cliche imagery.  Sometimes with ceramics and pottery, no imagery is better.  Think good design.
  • Your creation should depict obvious inspiration received from researched artist.
  • Form is important, but so is exterior color and texture.
  • Your creation should be well crafted.
  • No larger than 10" in any direction
  • Exterior color application should be finished with underglaze or stain, and finishing glaze.

Investigation
  1. Click on the above link buttons or the "Contemporary Ceramic Artists" pdf file.
  2. Research an artist you like.
  3. Go to Schoology > Courses > Ceramics A:  https://osseo.schoology.com
  4. Complete the "Project Investigation" Assignment and submit.

Plan
  1. After completing the above Investigation Assignment in Schoology and listing possible ideas you have for your own creation from the inspiration gained from your chosen artist's work, find an image of your chosen artist's work and save it to your photos app on your ipad.
  2. Download the "Sketchbook Express" App on your ipad.
  3. Upload the image into your Sketchbook App
  4. Create a new layer aside from the image layer.  This will be the layer you draw on.  With a pencil tool, trace around the form of the work.  Draw in the color and textures of the work along with any other details that may be helpful from the work.
  5. Then, with the same Sketchbook app, create a minimum of 3 thumbnail sketches of ideas you have for your own creation which is inspired from the work of your chosen artist.  It's best to use a stylus for this portion of your plan.
  6. Finally, upload and submit your sketches to the Schoology assignment submission.

Using the hand-building skills you've already learned and practiced, create a sculpture or vessel, or combination of the two, that best portrays your interpretation of your chosen artist's work, as it inspires you to create something original.
