Lesson 4 - Day 1

Formative Assessment - Drawing Fonts

PART I - Basic Lettering
The following list of exercises will be completed before moving on to Adobe Illustrator.  On your graph paper, complete each bullet point after Manders' demonstration:
  • Draw 3 sets of lines:  The Cap Height, X-Height, and Base Line for each set
  • Think of and write down 3 different word opposites (ex.  Big / Small, Fat / Thin, Round / Square)
  • Sketch the rough outline of the letters with a pencil.  Design the font in a way that describes the word you chose.  Keep the size and spacing of the letters consistent.
  • Next, trace all 3 sets of letters with a fine tip pen.
  • Erase all pencil marks
  • Experiment with filling in the letters with tone or adding patterns.  Embellish your letters.
  • Finally, for one set of your designed letters, label the parts of the font anatomy: ascender, descender, bowl, cross-bar, serifs (head & foot), terminals, counter-form, aperture.

PART II - Altering Letter Design
Follow along with Manders demonstration.  You will be writing your name in 3 original fonts that you create.
  • Begin by drawing the Cap Height, X-Height, and Base Line for each set.
  • Draw the rough outline of your name.
  • Alter the ascenders, descenders, and terminals of each letter in an expressive manner.  Experiment with different bowl curves.
  • Alter or add serifs to each letter.
  • Consider adding depth to your letters.

PART III - Creating Ligatures
Using your ideas from the previous exercises, create 3 different logos with linked letters called "Ligatures".
  • Draw a rough outline of each
  • Trace with pen and ink
  • Finalize before scanning
  • Scan in your drawing or take a picture of your drawing with your ipad to be imported into Adobe Illustrator.

PART IV - Finalizing with Illustrator
Complete all 5 video tutorial lessons on the basics of Adobe Illustrator before illustrating your logo.  Post all 5 assignments to the listed Schoology Discussion blog as exported jpgs.
