Unit 3 - Stop Motion Animation

For this first unit, we will explore and review the basics of stop motion animation.  In animation, stop motion animation is a cinematic process, or technique used to make static objects appear as if they were moving. This technique is commonly used in claymation and puppet-based animation. The objects are brought to life by breaking up the figure's motion into increments and filming one frame of film per increment.  This will be the basis for our work as we learn the ins and outs of animation and Adobe After Effects.
Formative:  Lesson 1 - Complete 3 different animated tween files.
Formative:  Lesson 2 - Complete 3 different animated shape files.
Formative:  Lesson 3 - Photoshop Puppet Warp.  Create 1 puppet warped figure of your choice.

Create a Jif...or Gif, uhhh...no wait...??!!!

We all love GIFs, we all use them and yet none of us are totally sure if we’re saying it right. The “GIF” vs. “JIF” debate has become so polarizing in recent years that even President Obama has weighed in on the issue. While Obama is more of a “GIF”-saying kind of guy, the creator of Graphics Interchange Format, Steve Wilhite prefers the pronunciation “JIF.”

Thanks to the Connecticut based sketch comedy group @ HelloGeneric, the argument is back and climbing on Reddit (appropriately in GIF form). And after receiving more than 4 million hits since posting this hilarious rebuttal yesterday, the Internet seems to agree with their take on the issue.

The issue comes down to whether you use a hard or soft G, which both vary in usage throughout the English language. So as long as there’s both giraffes and golden retrievers, there will probably people saying “GIF” and “JIF.”

Summative - Photoshop Animated Gif

Option 1
For this Art Problem, you have been challenged with the task of creating a funny, original animated gif.  This means you are not allowed to use images off the internet.
Project Criteria
1.  File > New document.  Depending on the meme size you are searching for, start with the following dimensions:

Square Meme - 700px x 700px
Landscape Meme Dimension - 700px x 550px
Portrait Meme Dimension - 450px x 700px
2.  Originality = Begin with your own drawing or photograph.  Nothing from the internet.
3.  Create your image in Photoshop using the tools you've learned so far (ie: brushes, paint fill, marquee tools, shapes, etc)
4.  Use the Artprompts.org generator for an idea if you struggle.
How many layer frames would be needed to make this meme?
How many different layers are at work for this animated meme?
How many frames did it take to animate the flowing hair and cape?
How many frames where used to make these dancing characters?
Photoshop liquify or simply the smudge tool (pointy finger tool) applied in random fashion on multiple copied layers could give you this effect.
Option 2
For this Art Problem option, you are allowed to use any pre-existing artwork you have made from this class or previous computer art courses.
Project Criteria
1.  80% of the objects in your art should move.
2.  Movements should fit theme and add to the unity of the overall work.
3.  Save for Web & Devices as gif
