Unit 3 - Identity Self Portrait

Picture
How do people stereotype you?  What are unreasonable expectations people hold on you?  How could you create an expressive image of yourself by going beyond the traditional portrait?

PART I - Sketchbook Investigation
For your sketchbook, search and find a master portrait painting that you like.  You may search in Art in America magazines or other related magazines, online resources or posters.  This image should be in color. Re-create a study of the style of the painting.  This should be the type of brush stroke used, matched value or tonal ranges, and proportions of the features.  Try to copy from the master.  Then, decide on the self portrait photograph you want to use for your own composition. Draw and color your portrait in the same style as the master. Example provided.  You do not need to paint in your sketchbook.  You may use colored pencil, pastel, or marker to match color.  Also, brainstorm and answer the proposed questions at the intro to this project description.
This will be given a formative grade in Schoolview.

PART II - The Composition
Your assignment / project is to create an original and expressive self portrait that goes beyond the traditional photographed-bust style portrait. This should be a mixed media painting composition. Think of creative ways to use text/type, images, stencils, found objects, etc.  Examples provided below.

PART IV - Your Reference
You may need to find an image of yourself to use as reference.  Although your style may be abstract, from using a master artist whose style may be abstract, you can still use a reference image to capture and include your most defining traits.
PART V - Cultural Connections
Watch both short videos on Margaret Keane's "Big Eyes".  You may even want to rent the movie "Big Eyes" and watch it...it's quite good!  Click on link to Schoology.com and answer the questions about the cultural connections you may find within your self and your work much like Keane did in her own.

Still Stuck???  Try This...

Create a 7 Layer Portait
  1. Under Painting - Begin with a washed out under-painting (a background just to add color to the composition to be painted over)
  2. Masking a Pattern - With tape, create repetition and movement by masking off certain areas in a pattern.  Then add another layer of thicker color by blending.  Remove tape.
  3. Background Texture Spray - Draw your portrait over layers 1 & 2.  With stencil contact paper, trace and cut out the outline of your portrait.  With your portrait covered with stencil mask, loosely spray paint some texture into the background.
  4. Painted Portrait -
  5. Image Transfer -
  6. Stencil Spray -
  7. Glossy Varnish -
