Artistic Challenge
For this unit's summative, you will be going back into Photoshop to create an expressive self portrait that will depict your personality, mood, experiences, talents, etc., by using images and elements of art to portray abstract design.  You will need to complete the Mood Board and this pages formative assessments before beginning the summative.  This will be a good way to get to know your classmates.

Investigate
Why do artists create self portraits?
How can portraits communicate an idea?
How do artists make photos "new"?

Plan = Mood Board
Brainstorm:  Who are you?  What are your interests?  What do you want to communicate to others about yourself?
Find a partner to work with while taking images if you want.
Complete the formative lessons
Plan how you will compose the visual information

Project Criteria:
  1. Take 5 selfies with different poses or faces (ie.;  close eyes, look sideways, move mouth, stick out tongue, make angry / happy face, etc.).  Keep them, but for this intro project use only 1.  Utilize the dark room, umbrella lights to get dynamic lighting effects.
  2. Use the Rule of Thirds, Symmetrical Balance, or Asymmetrical Balance for your composition.
  3. DO NOT use full images from the internet.  Anything you borrow must be majorly altered or manipulated from the original.
  4. DO NOT use recognizable characters or images.
  5. Document Setup:  Use a portrait style orientation.  Dimension size:  9x12 inches.  Resolution: 300 dp
  6. Use multiple layers.  A minimum of 20 layers.
  7. Use custom brushes
  8. Use blend modes
  9. Use texture layers

  10. Have fun with it.  Explore different design ideas.

Formative Lessons

When finished with each Formative Lesson, submit a jpg copy or pdf copy to Schoology.

Vid #1 - Clone Stamp Tool

Pick one image.  Use the Clone Stamp Tool to remove the captioned part of the picture as accurate as possible.  Make it look believable and not "Photoshopped."

Vid #2 -
Custom Brush, Gradient, Blend Mode

Watch the "Creating an Image Brush" video below.  Complete the assignment for this video.
Create or download the following custom brush:
  1. Splatter or water color brush
  2. Smoke brush
  3. Spash, water or drip brush
Below are downloadable brushes for Photoshop.  There are many free downloadable Photoshop Brushes on the web.  ***Be cautious of possible files that may lead to viruses however.
  • Double click on the links to download the brush.  An icon will appear near the dock of your mac.
  • Click "Open"
  • Photoshop will automatically load your new brush to the paint brush options at the top of your option bar in Photoshop.
  • Pull down the menu of brushes.  The new brush will appear at the end of the list.

Vid #3 - Image Adjustment: Threshold

Use one of your selfies and apply a threshold effect to it.

Vid #4 -
Duplicate Layer, Content Aware, Liquify

Create an example of this effect with one of your selfie pics.  Apply the same steps and effects to your own image in the way the creator of this video does for his image.  Naturally we don't have this image of the woman.

The creator of this tutorial refers to "control".  He is working on a PC.  When you hear "control", click "command" instead.

There are some areas that might be helpful to pause and rewind.

Content Aware:  Choose Edit>Fill and from the Use menu, choose Content-Aware. Click OK andPhotoshop fills the selection with surrounding pixels and blends them. The voodoo it uses to fill your selection is random and changes each time you use the command.
