Line, Surface, Action!
Summative:  Jean Michel Basquiat

The Art Problem
How do you as an artist communicate your style, your concerns, or who you are, and do it through a creation that is unique, balanced and aesthetically pleasing to an audience?
What is your human purpose in relationship to your own culture?

Manders wants you to realize that you...
...can explore and plan themes, ideas, concepts or styles in preparation for an artwork.
...can use
the elements of art & principles of design in your artwork.
...can develop your
skills while responding to, creating, and presenting artistic work.

Your Art Challenge
For this unit's summative project, in reflection and execution of what you've learned so far about line, surface and "training your eyes to see", you will be studying a street artist by the name of Jean-Michel Basquiat.  Essentially, the drawing you create could pay homage to this revolutionary artist, but ultimately should depict YOUR style, interests, concerns, etc...

Teacher Given Project Criteria
  • The composition should be in response to our group Blind Contour Study Drawing
  • The composition needs to be created using at least 1 of the 4 line drawing techniques we learned through formative practice.
  • The composition should be finished with value shading using Generals graphite pencils.

Process
  1. Manders will give you an object.
  2. Each student will have a piece of drawing paper and pencil
  3. Then, essentially, we will play "Musical Chairs, Gallery Walk".  Each student will begin at his/her own seat and draw the object in front of them in the technique of Blind Contour.  We will do this for about 30 seconds to music.
  4. Next, once the music stops, each student rotates to the next person's drawing area.  The student, then, draws what they see in front of them again on the paper in front of them (they do not bring their original drawing with them; they just move their bodies to the next "station").
  5. We continue this until each paper is filled with Blind Contour studies of the random objects.
  6. Next, the student returns to his/her original position and paper.  With a view finder, the student then selects the most aesthetically pleasing and balanced area of what has been drawn by the class.
  7. Finally, the student artist will "redraw" their selection from the view finder onto a final composition drawing paper.  Using what they've learned about drawing techniques so far, he/she will turn the Blind Contour study drawing into a Basquiat inspired original composition in the style and technique of his/her choice.

Develop the Composition:  Push it Further!!!

To push your summative project further to increase visual interest and aesthetics, choose 1 or 2 of the options from each category below.  How will you push your drawing further?  How do you know it is aesthetically pleasing and visually engaging?
Elements of Art
  • Thick vs thin lines
  • Varying qualities of line
  • Color (pastels, markers, oil pastels)
Principles of Design
  • Contrast (black & white)
  • Variation of shape, line, or color.
  • Look for Asymmetry
Layers
  • Planar drawings
  • Cross Contour drawing
  • collage
  • Acetate / alchohol ink

Subject Matter
  • choose something or someone that best illustrates an issue you are concerned or passionate about.  Take photos or find images online to draw from.  Online images should be appropriated away from its original state.
Do As the Locals Do!
For inspiration, Basquiat would listen to music or turn up the TV volume and include words and phrases into his work while listening.
  • Include words or phrases in your work.
  • make lines and marks in response to music you listen to.

Find Asymmetrical Balance in Your Mark Making!
In asymmetrical balance, the two sides are not identical, but differ from one another. However, the elements are arranged so that there is a sense of balance, or stability in the work. In the illustrations below, try to find how the works show strong asymmetrical balance.
