Alternate Project Challenge - Triptych Story Vessel


A triptych from the Greek adjective τρίπτυχον "triptukhon" ("three-fold"), from tri, i.e., "three" and ptysso, i.e., "to fold" or ptyx, i.e., "fold") is a work of art (usually a panel painting) that is divided into three sections, or three carved panels that are hinged together and can be folded shut or displayed open. It is therefore a type of polyptych, the term for all multi-panel works. The middle panel is typically the largest and it is flanked by two smaller related works, although there are triptychs of equal-sized panels. The form can also be used for pendant jewelry.
Despite its connection to an art format, the term is sometimes used more generally to connote anything with three parts, particularly if they are integrated into a single unit.


​​A photographic triptych is a common style used in modern commercial artwork. The photographs are usually arranged with a plain border between them. The work may consist of separate images that are variants on a theme, or may be one larger image split into three.

The triptych form arises from early Christian art, and was a popular standard format for altar paintings from the Middle Ages onwards. Its geographical range was from the eastern Byzantine churches to the Celtic churches in the west. During the Byzantine period, tryptichs were often used for private devotional use, along with other relics such as icons.  Renaissance painters such as Hans Memling and Hieronymus Bosch used the form. Sculptors also used it. Triptych forms also allow ease of transport.
Process Suggestion:
  1. Brainstorm ideas for subject matter you are passionate about or something you find interesting.
  2. Take a bunch of photographs of that subject matter.  Capture 3 photographs in progression to tell the triptych narative.
  3. Print out your photographs
  4. Draw a triangular shape on each photograph.  Go from corner to corner or edge to edge.  Basically, use the whole page.
  5. Cut out the triangles to use as templates.
  6. Create your slab vase by using your templates for each slab.
  7. Brush on Engobe slip to the exterior of your vase.
  8. With a small blunt object, like the tip of a mechanical pencil or wooden skewer, trace over the image of each triangle on the corresponding side of the vase.
  9. You will use a Sgraffito technique to enhance the contrast of the design onto the exterior of the vase.  
Sketchbook Requirement / Planning
  1. Describe the story you would like to tell through your photographs
  2. What photographs will you use?  Take photos and place them in your planning sheet
  3. What shape will your vase be?  
  4. Create a series of 3-4 thumbnail sketches of what you would like your creation to look like
  5. What colors would you like your vase to be?  How will the Sgraffito technique effect your color choices?  
  6. Add feet to your vase.  What will your vase's feet look like?  Research will be required.  Find examples of 3 different styles of pottery feet.  
  7. What will you use your vase for?  Who will see your creation?  
  8. Any more information that would help you clearly create this vase???
