Slab Built Choice Project

How do ceramicists make art that is both aesthetically pleasing and functional?

Project Option Challenge #1 - "Home vs. Building" Inspired Lumineer

  • Create a slab built lumineer inspired by your interpretation of "home" or inspired by unique architecture.

Formative Planning Requirements
(Sketchbook / Ongoing Google Doc):
  1. Intention Statement:  What will you create and why are you creating it?  Write a paragraph describing your intention for your project.
  2. Response and reflection to slide show below and other research done into the project.  What was learned?
  3. A minimum of 3 of your favorite found examples of project or ceramic art as inspiration.
  4. 1 sketch / drawing of your idea with color choices and exterior decoration details.
  5. Brainstorm.  Types of textures to be created in the clay
  6. Paper / Cardstock templates for walls and other parts of the structure.

Project Option Challenge #2 - "Out of the Ordinary" Slab Built Vase

  • Create a slab built vase that depicts an aesthetic that is "Out of the Ordinary".  From form to decoration, how unique and "one of a kind" can you design this vase?

Formative Planning Requirements
 (Sketchbook / Ongoing Google Doc):
  1. Intention Statement:  What will you create and why are you creating it?  Write a paragraph describing your intention for your project.
  2. Response and reflection to video tutorial below and other research done into the project.  What was learned?
  3. A minimum of 3 of your favorite found examples of project or ceramic art as inspiration.
  4. 1 sketch / drawing of your idea with color choices and exterior decoration details.
  5. Brainstorm.  Types of textures, patterns, pressed designed, sculptural elements, etc. to be created in the clay
  6. Paper / Cardstock templates for walls and other parts of the vessel.

Project Option Challenge #3 - Slab Draped Decorative "Nesting Bowls"
  • Create a series of draped slab nesting bowls that fit inside one another.  From form to decoration, how unique and "one of a kind" can you design these bowls?  The bowls should "look" like they relate to one another.  They may be different but should feel like they belong to the same family.

Formative Planning Requirements
 (Sketchbook / Ongoing Google Doc):
  1. Intention Statement:  What will you create and why are you creating it?  Write a paragraph describing your intention for your project.
  2. Response and reflection to the videos below and other research done into the project.

Project Option Challenge #4 - "Big Brother Box": 2nd in the Series of Boxes

  • Create a 2nd box, one that responds to the first box you made.  Think of this 2nd box as the first boxes "Big Brother".  Artists often create "series" or bodies of work.  These are artworks that have a similar aesthetic to each other, but may be different in their own right in regards to message or subject matter.

Formative Planning Requirements
 (Sketchbook / Ongoing Google Doc):
  1. Intention Statement:  What will you create and why are you creating it?  Write a paragraph describing your intention for your project.  How will this work relate to the first "formative" box you've made?  How will they visually connect without the second box being a "copy" of the first?
  2. Response and reflection to the videos below and other research done into the project.
  6. Paper / Cardstock templates for walls and other parts of the box.

Project Option Challenge #5 - "Tromp L'oiel" Sculptural Vessel
  • Create a sculptural vessel that "fools the eye".  The French translation is "Tromp L'oiel".  Use slabs and other methods of construction to build your vessel.  This sculpture should be able to hold something, hence dubbing it a "vessel".

Formative Planning Requirements
(Sketchbook / Ongoing Google Doc):
