Printmaking:
Organs to Organs

How can themes of juxtaposition enhance a viewers experience to artwork?
Juxtaposition is the act of positioning two or more things side by side or close together as per the Merriam Webster dictionary.
In visual arts, juxtaposition entails making the ordinary look extraordinary and represents one of the essential techniques in the Surrealism art movement. For example, overlapping two images together in impossible combinations.
Juxtaposition in Art

The Art Challenge:

Create a printed and embellished or elaborated work of art that portrays a juxtaposition between "organs".

Project Suggestions:

  1. Create one drawing of an "organ" to be printed multiple times.
  2. Create two or more drawings of "organs" to be printed once each or multiple times
  1. Create many separate printed compositions with added illustrations.
  2. Create one composition with many prints and added illustrations.

Unit Objectives
  • Students will create a representation of  "organs" as illustration on a printing plate.
  • Students will print a representation of "organs" from a linoleum block.
  • Students will hand-embellish their prints to convey an emotion or story.
  • Students will investigate how to preserve artwork for future audiences.

Formative Assessments:
All work should be completed in your sketchbook / process journal, and added to your Ongoing Google Doc:

Lesson 1:  Investigate
Materials Needed:
  • Sketchbook
  • Pencil
  • Online resources, books or magazines

How do you interpret "organs"?  How would an artist juxtapose "organs"?  Do "organs" only have to do with the body?
How do artists make personal, cultural, historical or societal connections through their artwork?

Assignment:
  1. Brainstorm a list of "organs" that come to mind.  Create a visual mind map of ideas.  What organs would be cool, interesting, challenging, dynamic, detailed, etc. to draw?  What resources will you use to draw your organs?
  2. Find your reference images.  Print them and insert them onto your Ongoing Google Doc.

Lesson 2:  Sketch & Draw
Materials Needed
  • Vellum Drawing or Transfer Paper
  • Pencils
  • Eraser
  • Reference Images - anatomical photos only; no cartoons, drawings, illustrations, etc.  Nothing already hand made by an artist.

Assignment:
  1. Through precise observational drawing, sketch and draw the best rendition of your reference image or images of "organs".

Lesson 3:  Transfer & Cut
Materials Needed
  • Drawings completed in graphite
  • Lino block (easy-cut)
  • Bench Plate
  • Lino cut carving tools

Assignment:
  1. Transfer your drawing(s) to the easy-cut block and begin the carving process.  Manders will demonstrate.
  2. Take a photo of your progress and insert on your Ongoing Google Doc as process documentation

Lesson 4:  The Printing Process
Materials Needed
  • Easy cut block design
  • Inking Plate
  • Printing Ink (water based)
  • Rolling / Inking Brayer
  • Printing Baron
  • Composition Printing / Illustration Paper
Assignment:
  1. Watch both videos.
  2. Compose your printed illustration.  First decide how you will set up your printed composition or compositions from the suggestions at the top of this webpage.
  3. Begin printing your block.  Manders will demonstrate.
  4. Take a photo of your progress and insert on your Ongoing Google Doc as process documentation

Summative Assessment
Create a printed illustration that depicts your interpretation of juxtaposition of "organs".

  • Explore different color combinations and mediums to create the series of multiple separate prints or one composition of printed images.
  • Add details to the prints using various materials to express the emotions they are trying to convey to the viewers, or the conceptual intent of the juxtaposition of subject matter through illustration.
  • Discuss how to display and preserve the artwork for future audiences.
