Summative Composition

How do artists represent a person through portraiture?

For the project, we will be creating a portrait of someone who has influenced you in your life or inspires you. This person can be alive or dead, family, friend, famous, or yourself.  However, along with the portrait itself, include other elements to best represent who the person is.

PROJECT REQUIREMENTS
- Minimum size 8" x 10" // Maximum size 18" x 24"
- Image must exhibit use of value and changes of tone throughout the portrait.  Consider using hatching, cross hatching, contour hatching, stippling, or scribbling as the primary value source. (not blending)
- use ink to finish the drawing (pen, felt-tip, or micron)
- add color through either watercolor or personal alcohol based markers
- background intentionally relates to the subject through symbolism or expressive strokes or images
- include 3 paragraph bio of the subject  including birthdate w/ location (see outline below)

REQUIRED BIO STATEMENT

Birthdate and Location of person
Death if applicable

Paragraph One
Who is this person? Describe their background: Where did they grow up? What were / are some of their influences? What are some of their accomplishments? What were some of their struggles they overcame? What makes them stand out?

Paragraph Two
How has this person influenced your life? Why do you look up to them? How do you relate to them and their story? What lessons have you learned from their journey? What are some things from them you may want to incorporate into your life? How has knowing who they are changed who you are?

Paragraph Three
How does your drawing honor or highlight who this person is and their story? What symbolism did you add? How do the colors you choose represent them? Did you exaggerate any features? Do their clothes or accessories in your drawingadd to the story of who they are?

The Portrait Illustrations of William Stout

William Stout created a book of Illustrations highlighting many blues legends throughout history that played an influential role in his life not only as a soundtrack but also as familiar friends he could turn to,  to help him through hard times. William Stout not only captures their likeness through various value techniques but, he also highlights each musicians iconic character and unique story through exaggerations and symbolism.  Each portrait includes  a short biography including background, interesting life tidbits, birthdate w/ location, death (if applicable) and whatever else seemed fitting.

Struggling with Ideas???  Try one of these...

Loomis / Proko Freestyle Portrait

So, we've just spent a bunch of time practicing the proportions of the head and facial features by drawing along with Proko while learning the Loomis method of portraiture.  Why not use it?  Create a portrait by drawing a 3/4 turn, front view, or profile of a portrait.  Turn the generic portrait into a creative art piece.  Add other elements, subject matter, imagery, etc. to tell a story or metaphor.

Emotional Portrait Selfie

Take a photo of yourself making an emotional expression or create your self portrait depicting an emotional scene.  Print out your photo on an 8 1/2  x 11 paper.   Use the grid method of transfer drawing.
