Foreshortening

Foreshortening is the method of rendering a specific object or figure in a picture in depth. The artist records, in varying degrees, the distortion that is seen by the eye when an object or figure is viewed at a distance or at an unusual angle.

Foreshortening practice exercises:
  • With a partner, while someone is standing on a chair or at a close up perspective to the model, take a picture of the model in a way that shows dynamic foreshortening.
  • Redraw the picture as forms showing linear perspective and foreshortening (like from the 2nd video under this section).

Summative Composition Challenges

Art Prompts - Environments
Linear Perspective (Part II)

Choice Challenge #1

Photo Reference to Art
Take a photo of a structure of your choice from 2 points of perspective or 3 points of perspective.  Draw the photo as accurately as possible then add your own flair of imagination.

or...

Use one of these photo examples:

Choice Challenge #2

Tree House Fantasy
There are many elaborate and amazing tree houses that creative people have built from all over the world.  What would yours look like?

Using what you've learned about 2 or 3 point linear perspective design and draw the tree house of your fantasies.  Finish in pen and ink.

Choice Challenge #3

Surreal Environment
What would an environment look like on another civilized planet?  In another dimension?

By using the Art Prompts Website found here:
http://artprompts.org/environment-prompts/
or by clicking on the button above,
Create a drawing composition in 2 or 3 point perspective that represents your interpretation of the "Environment" prompt it gives you.

Choice Challenge #4

Crazy Foreshortening
How do artists create a sense of intense mood within a scene?

Achieve deep depth of field by creating a drawing using the concepts of foreshortening learned from the above videos and your instructor.
Take a picture of the person, place, or thing you would like foreshortened to use as a reference for your drawing.  You must use the concepts of 3 point perspective in this drawing to get the desired effect.

Choice Challenge #5

Mouse to Zenith!
How can changing the angle of a scene enhance the viewer's reaction to it?

You are a mouse!  Draw a scene from "worms eye view" that represents your understanding of 3 point perspective.  Set up a still life of objects that you can find in the room and draw them in accurate 3 point perspective to Zenith.  Essentially, pretend you are drawing from the perspective of a mouse looking up at objects!

Choice Challenge #6

Op Art
Create an optical illusion.  Study the masters of Op Art and design your own funky twisted assortment of angular lines while using the concepts of accurate 2 or 3 point perspective.
Picture

Choice Challenge #7

Someone's Watching
Draw the inside of a room in 2 or 3 point perspective from the perspective of what an image from a video camera might resemble.  Think of a hidden camera somewhere in the room.  What might be going on?
Picture

Criteria
  • min. size = 9 x 12 in.
  • 2 or 3 point perspective used
  • finished with pencil shading, charcoal pencil, markers, colored pencil, ink, or ink wash.  If you are going to explore this project with ink wash you must use watercolor paper.
  • Clear representation of theme and intent

Extending Your Learning

David Chelsea - Comic Artist & Illustrator
David Chelsea was born in Portland Oregon in 1959. Educated at the School Of Visual Arts, Parsons Institute and The New York Academy of Art, David has been a commercial artist for over thirty years. His work has appeared in hundreds of publications including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Press, Seattle Weekly, Chicago Tribune, Reader's Digest, Boston Phoenix and Portland Monthly. His celebrity caricatures decorated the Eight Day Week page in The New York Observer for over a decade, and he illustrated the Modern Love column for the New York Times Style section from 2004 to 2008.

A published cartoonist since the age of twelve, David has drawn comics for numerous publications and is the author of the graphic novels David Chelsea In Love, Welcome To The Zone and the how-to books Perspective! For Comic Book Artists and Extreme Perspective! For Artists. David Chelsea In Love has been translated into French, and Perspective! has appeared in French, Japanese, Korean and Italian. In recent years David has taken up the challenge devised by Scott McCloud, to draw an entire 24 page comic within 24 hours, a record twelve times, and two of these stories have been printed in Top Shelf's collection 24x2. As a natural outgrowth of his comics work, David has been in demand as a storyboard artist, working for advertising clients such as Tyee, Wieden+Kennedy and Hawthorne Direct, and for Whitewater Films on the feature Nearing Grace.

David's work on Perspective! and Extreme Perspective! stems from a lifelong interest. He has lectured on the subject at numerous institutions including The University Of Oregon, Pacific Northwest College of Art and Seattles's Gage Academy Of Art. Years ago, David devised his own six point perspective method for painting on spherical objects such as globes and bowling balls, and his spherical paintings are in many private collections.

David lives in Portland's historic Irvington's district with his wife Eve, son Benjamin and daughter Rebecca.
