Cold Connections: Animal Pendant

For this first project, you will be applying the concepts of Cold Connections to create a two, or multi-colored, textured, "Animal" inspired pendant.

Techniques
  • Sawing, Filing, Sanding, Polishing
  • Punching (power punch pliers / flex shaft speed drill)
  • Riveting (for cold connections)
  • Stamping / Chasing / Repoussé (for applied texture or embellishment)

How will you know if your design is aesthetically pleasing?

A new perspective can be a great learning tool.  How do other artists work?

What is Riveting?

Formative Sketchbook Planning

Using graph paper, draw out a minimum of 3 thumbnail versions of design ideas.  Find a series of animal pictures from books, magazines or online as references.  Use the Elements of Art and Principles of Design concepts to help you design your pendant.  Choose one Element of Art and one Principle of Design and explain how your design best represents them.
Sketchbook Criteria
  • printed reference photos
  • sketches of designs
  • clearly stated / drawn / graphed / designed ideas of how and where rivets will be used
  • clear description of how texture and color will be used in the design

Summative Project Criteria & Rubric

  • work must show a use of at least two color / types of metal
  • a portion of the pendant / animal must be textured by stamping, chasing / repousse
  • the work must be functional.  Must have a clasp or loop for hanging
  • work must show refinement work: filing, sanding, polishing
  • work must have applied cold connection techniques of sawing, riveting,
  • applied rivets should work intelligently into the design
