Building Creativity & Generating Ideas

Day 1 - Quarantine Superhero Sculpture

Create a Quarantine Superhero Sculpture
Be creative! Fill the page with an original design.

Include a description of your superhero: name, incredible powers/talents, pet-peeves, and any other interesting or funny details. Use shading or color to complete the design.

Day 2 - Save for the Future

Design a "piggy bank" that reflects, or represents, something you want to save for in your future. Use shading or color to complete the design.

Your design should not be a pig, but rather should have the same visual imagery as the thing you'd want to save for...unless of course, you wanted to save to buy a pig...

Day 3 - Quarantine Pottery

Draw a vase or some other vessel form that you would throw on the potter's wheel and decorate it with a unique, detailed design inspired by your life during quarantine.

Use shading or color to complete the design.

Day 4 - Meet the Artist Challenge

Meet the Artist Challenge:
A popular trend has been spreading across the internet- Artists draw themselves and describe basic information about themselves for followers to see. Your objective is to draw yourself in your own style in whatever attire you usually wear and whatever formal or casual setting you wish. Include your likes and dislikes and an “inventory” of what you usually carry around in your backpack, bag, or purse. Fill the page and add shading or color to complete the work.

Day 5 - Your Favorite Bobblehead

Sketch a unique Bobblehead sculpture of your favorite person right now.

Use shading or color to complete the design.

Day 6 - Visual Puns or Idioms

The OTHER Meaning- Idiom Art: Choose an idiom or a saying that generally does not mean what is says. Design a vessel that conveys the literal (exactly what it says) meaning. For example: “Keep an open mind”, “Bite off more than you can chew.”
Fill the page and add shading or color to complete the work of art. This assignment can be done more than one time by exploring a new topic.
Possible idioms include:
  • Beat around the bush - Meaning: Avoid sharing your true viewpoint or feelings because it is uncomfortable
  • Bite the bullet - Meaning: To get an unfavorable situation or chore over with now because it will need to get finished eventually
  • It is raining cats and dogs - Meaning: It is raining heavily
  • Caught between a rock and a hard place - Meaning: Making a choice between two unpleasant choices
  • Getting a taste of your own medicine - Meaning: Being treated the way that you have been treating others
  • Giving someone the cold shoulder - Meaning: ignoring someone
  • Heard it on the grapevine - Meaning: Hearing rumors about someone or something
  • Hitting the nail on the head - Meaning: Performing a task with exactness
  • Letting the cat out of the bag - Meaning: Sharing information that was intended to be a secret
  • Pulling someone’s leg - Meaning: Joking with someone
  • Stealing someone’s thunder - Meaning: Taking credit for someone else’s achievements
  • Straight from the horse’s mouth - Meaning: Reading or hearing something from the source

Day 8 - A Virtual Museum Tour

Picture
Sketchbook Work:
  • After choosing a museum to tour in depth, stop at a 3D or ceramic work.  Sketch the work the best you can.  List the information about the work.  Describe the work in detail.
  • Design your own piece of 3D art or pottery inspired by the work you chose.  Make a personal or cultural connection through your design.  Make it you, make it contemporary.
Take a virtual Museum Tour. Choose three of the works and write down the title and artist. Then answer the following questions:
  • How would you describe this artwork to someone who has never seen it?
  • What is emphasized in the artwork and how did the artist make it most important?
  • What is the meaning or message of the artwork? Why do you think that?

Day 9 - Fauna Vase

Investigate the native plants and animals of Minnesota and design a work inspired by the Porcelain Fauna and Human Anatomy Embedded into Thick Botanical Fields by Artist Melis Buyruk OR draw a piece that expresses a parallel idea to hers but uses only non-organic items for the imagery.  Click below:
