Like SAMO (later to be known by his birth name, Jean Michel Basquiat) many artists begin as an unknown free spirit experimenting with their expression through the happenings and paths life creates for them. For this painting, reflect on what paths life has taken you on so far and create a composition that represents your own personal expression. Process Option 1 - Multimedia Collage & Painting
Locate old notes, writings, doodles, drawings, poems, diary entries, sketches, newspaper articles that pertain to you, etc. to be used as the under-surface of your composition.
Next, glue down your found articles and gesso or varnish over them; however be sure you can still make out what's underneath.
Use your articles of found writings, etc as inspiration for your composition.
Your composition should be larger than 22"x28".
Process Option 2 - Painting a Drawing or Painting Over an Image
Find an image that you are inspired to paint. What is your MUSE?
Blow up your image and print it out in parts using a computer program like Photoshop, Illustrator or Word. Or take multiple images with your camera of different cropped portions of the object and print them on separate sheets. Think Panorama.
Glue down your images over your canvas and gesso over it.
Add oil sticks over the images in an expressive way.
Your composition should be larger than 22"x28".
