You may need to research current topics that involve your theme.  Research the art of local Star Tribune editorial cartoon artist, Steve Sack, along with other editorial illustrators you think may be helpful or for inspiration.

  • Choose an artwork example from above.  Analyze the work.  What is the work about?  What is the evidence?  How has the artist utilized design principles to best compose the work?
  • What is your SI theme?  Why are you focusing your art on this theme?
  • What are some issues that are going on around you?  What are issues that pertain to your SI?
  • How do artists use elements of art and principles of design to get their point across?
  • Will your illustration have type / text?  How does type / text affect the visual message?
  • How will you solve your problem?  What will you create?  
  • Create a mind map of ideas in your sketchbook for this artistic problem.  Draw thumbnails, list materials, etc.   What do you need to be successful?
